THE CANTEEN, SKETCH HOUSE
Finsbury Park, London
A year after opening Sketch House, UAL commissioned a large and unused, ground floor space as a canteen where breakfast would be served to overseas visitors during the summer holiday. With flexible seating and tabling, the Canteen can cater for up to 700 people for a continental breakfast Bold and robust finishes were essential and a printed vinyl flooring of hand drawn parquet flooring in black and white added the required punch to the vast unbroken floor area. The walls are painted in angled stripes, to match the theme throughout Sketch House, but this time in a different palette of mustard, blue and orange.
Elephant & Castle, London
Highline is a new development exclusively for UAL students, a short walk from London’s South bank. The building, arranged over 9 floors, runs alongside Victorian brick built railway arches which have been refurbished to form rentable artists’ studios as part of the scheme. Johnson Ribolla designed the student rooms, cluster kitchens, common rooms and all other public spaces developing an industrial theme to harmonise with the adjacent railway.
